Farmhouses of Hälsingland

This pamphlet describes and explains something of Hälsingland's fine
building culture. The type of construction in focus is that of the first
half of the 19th century. The photographs are all from ordinary farms,
not from Heritage Centres or museums. Most buildings are part of farms
or homes. Text, drawings and photographs by Erik Nordin, County Supervisor
of Ancient Buildings and Monuments, County Administrative Board.
Porches
of Pride

Hälsingland's variety of porches, saddle roofs, portals and doors
in their varying forms and colours is chronicled in words and pictures.
Photograph and Honorary Dr. Hilding Mickelsson took the photographs. The
extensive picture material was taken from Mickelsson's own archives, built
up under his lifelong documentation of the cultural heritage of Hälsingland.
Lars Stackell, of Gothenburg University, has a text about the history
of the porches. The book is published by Ekeströms Förlag and
is available in a new edition.
Ystegårn

Here is a presentation of one of the most geniune Hälsingland farms - Ystegårn in the village of Hillsta, Forsa parish. Glimpses of the farm's history, and the sights worth seeing here, are presented in words and pictures.
The author is Ingalill Tengvall, project leader of the Farmhouses of Hälsingland project.
Ystegårn is one of the Hälsingland farms which is open to visitors during the summer.

Andersson's doctoral thesis in History of Art at the Unviersity of Uppsala,
"Allmogemålaren Anders Ädel", is available
in bookshops. In the mid-19th century, the soldier Anders Ädel (1809-1888)
was employed in Ljusdal to decorate farms in north-west Hälsingland.
He gave the name "Ädel painting" to a remarkable, Ljusdal-Gustavian
style of decorative painting which had developed among the ordinary people
of the Ljusdal area. This artist was previously only known through oral
tradition. In Andersson's investigation, the story of Ädel's life
is reconstructed, and several new facts are presented about his times
and the surroundings in which he lived and worked. The book is richly
illustrated and has a summary in English. Maj-Britt
